- catalog abstract ""This report summarizes the findings resulting from the intensive excavation of a brick-lined storage cellar associated with the "House for Families" slave quarter (44 Fx 762/40-47), located at Mount Vernon Plantation. The quarter was in existence from circa 1760 until it was demolished in late 1792 or early 1793. An extremely rich assemblage of domestic refuse was recovered during two phases of excavation, in 1984-85 and in 1989-90. The excavation methods used are discussed, the feature itself is analyzed, and the artifacts recovered are described. Preliminary interpretations of patterns in the artifact assemblage are presented. The diversity and generally high quality of the domestic materials recovered suggests that these slaves benefitted from the proximity to the Washington household by receiving handed down items for their use. Preliminary results of the faunal analysis indicates a wide range of species, both wild and domestic, being consumed. It is postulated that these results may reflect a relatively high level of status accorded the inhabitants by the planter as a result of their occupations as house servants and craftspeople."--(p. ii).".
