- catalog description "Norman Simon (1914-1985), B.A., 1936, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; M.D., 1939, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, was Clinical Professor of Radiotherapy at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and an attending radiologist at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, New York. Simon was born in 1914 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He attended Lawrence High School and graduated in 1932, received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1936, and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1939. He subsequently completed internships at Mount Sinai Hospital in surgery and radiology, specializing in radiology for the duration of his medical career. Simon served with the United States Army Air Force between 1942 and 1945 as a Tactical Flight Surgeon and radiologist; he retired as a Major. Simon was responsible for the development of the Simon Afterloader, which allowed for the internal treatment of gynecological cancers with reduced risk to operating room staff. He patented the device in 1973, assigning manufacturing rights to Mount Sinai. Simon married Ruth Elaine Lichtenberg (1917-1910), with whom he had three children: Roger L. Simon, Wendy S. Schwartz, and Martha J. Simon. He died in 1985 of a cerebral hemorrhage at White Plains Hospital in New York.".
