- catalog description "Navy captain Winifred Quick Collins (1911-1999) was born in Great Falls, Mont., the daughter of Daniel A. and Mary Winifred (Farrell) Redden. She attended the University of Southern California (B.S. 1935), the Harvard-Radcliffe Program in Business Administration (1938), and Stanford University (M.A. 1952). She was commissioned as an ensign in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in August 1942, and in 1948 was in the first group of women commissioned in the United States Navy. In 1957 she was appointed Chief of Naval Personnel for Women, the most senior position for which women were eligible; she was the only woman line officer with the rank of captain. She retired in 1962, and was active in a number of organizations, including the National Navy League, in which she was the first woman elected vice-president and director (1965). Winifred Collins was married to Rear Admiral Howard Collins. She died in Washington, D.C., in 1999.".
