- catalog abstract ""There is not a single one of Dickens's novels which does not make reference to amazing resemblances between parents and children. In many of the novels, such as Oliver Twist and Bleak House, hereditary issues are a central concern of the plot. This book differs from other examinations of Dickens's fiction in making central an aspect of his work that is often overlookedhis fascination with heredity. Since the actual mechanics of hereditary transmission did not become known until the twentieth century, Dickens and Heredity describes what was believed about heredity in Dickens's time and suggests how these beliefs are reflected in his fiction. Goldie Morgentaler argues that Dickens's understanding of heredity changed dramatically after the 1859 publication of Darwin's The Origin of Species, so that the determinism of the early works gives way in the later novels to a far looser model of human development."--Jacket.".
