- catalog abstract ""The wave of deinstitutionalization that began in the 1960s energized a debate that continues today. What is the appropriate role of state hospitals? The debate is polarized, and infused with philosophical and ideological tensions. Some argue that there is no legitimate role for state hospitals, that they are obsolete, inhumane, and a drain on mental health resources. Others hold that complete elimination of state hospitals would constitute abandonment of people in great need, for whom services are available nowhere else. Technological arguments, as well as economic, political, and ideological ones, are marshalled in support of both positions. The chapters in this volume of New Directions for Mental Health Services examine the role of state hospitals from a number of perspectives, addressing issues of clinical technology as well as policy. From this examination emerges a principled view of the state hospital of the future, a view that permits moderation in political and ideological domains and respect for technological realities."--Jacket.".
