- catalog abstract "This article develops a conceptual framework to understand the transformation processes experienced by firms in emerging economies that undertake profound economic reform. We start by briefly reviewing the concept of structural reform, discussing the different reform types, and reviewing their speed, sequence and intensity of implementation. Next, we discuss the concept of "competitive environment" in the context of our framework, and explore how structural reforms impact it. We then describe the archetypal transformation process of a firm. Based on primary data collection through interviews, we identify the rationale and content of a specific sequence of action programs that tends to be followed by firms that face radical competitive environment charges due to economic reforms. Our discussion throughout the paper is supported by data and examples from Latin America, but our postulates and insights are meant to be applicable to any emerging economy.".
