- catalog abstract "Experimentation refers to trying out a course of action when outcomes are uncertain and failures are likely. Althoughexperimentation is known to facilitate innovation in organizations, knowledge about antecedent conditions promotingexperimentation is limited. This paper takes a relational perspective, arguing that status relationships in organizations critically affect experimentation behavior because of its inherent social risk. In two studies we found that low status individuals weremore likely to experiment when organizational values and rewards both encourage experimentation, and high status individualswere more likely to experiment when one condition encouraged experimentation and the other did not. These results could beexplained by high status individuals₂ ability to remain independent of organizational supports, the effect of arousal on novelbehaviors, or the benefits of combining supportive organizational conditions with focused goals.".
