- catalog abstract ""Throughout his life, J.M.W. Turner was fascinated by Oxford, 'the English Athens'. Indeed, no other place in England so consistently engaged his attention over so long a period, from the beginning of his career until the late 1830s. This book brings together for the first time all his views of the city, and discusses the circumstances surrounding the genesis of these works. They range from watercolours done by the teenage artist while staying with relations at the nearby village of Sunningwell, in Berkshire; numerous drawings and watercolours of the 1790s made for collectors and for private pleasure and instruction; ten watercolours commissioned for the Oxford Almanack between 1799 and 1804; two oil paintings for the Oxford dealer, James Wyatt in 1809-12; and the preparatory works and finished watercolours for several projects in the 1820s and 1830s, when Turner was at the height of his powers."--Jacket.".
