- catalog description "Pierce Hall was named for Henry Lillie Pierce, a former Mayor of Boston. The hall, designed by Shaw and Hunnewell, cost $255,000 to build in 1901. During World War I, Pierce Hall was used by the United States Navy to train radio operators. Pierce Hall is one of five buildings that serve as the home of the Division of Applied Sciences. It houses faculty and administrative offices, classrooms and laboratories for research and teaching in thermodynamics, fluid and solid mechanics and astrophysics. The Center for Earth and Planetary Physics occupies one wing. The Gordon McKay and Blue Hill Libraries are located in Pierce Hall.".
