- catalog description "Sparks Housewas built in 1838. Jared Sparks, the original owner of the house was born in Connecticut in 1815. After graduating from Harvard, Sparks became the first endowed professor in the United States in 1838. The house originally stood in the midst of an orchard at 48 Quincy Street. The University purchased the house in 1966 and planned to demolish it to make way for Gund Hall. The demolition never occurred, however, as Sparks House was moved to its present location at 21 Kirkland Street after the building on that site mysteriously caught fire on Christmas Eve, 1967.".
