- catalog description "Ilse Lichtenstadter (1907-1991) was a senior lecturer on Arabic at Harvard University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies from 1960-1974 (emertia lecturer, 1974-1991). Her research focused on Middle Eastern and Asian societies. Lichtenstadter, born in Hamburg, Germany, attended the University of Frankfurt (PhD 1931) and Oxford University (PhD 1937). After immigrating to the United States in 1938, Lichtenstadter became a cataloger of Judaica at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City (1938-1945). Before arriving at Harvard, Lichtenstadter served as a professor of Arabic literature and Islamic culture and dean of students at the Asia Institute in New York (1942-1953); lecturer of Islamic Culture at New York University (1953-1959); and lecturer on history and civilization of the Near and Middle East at Rutgers University (1959). Lichtenstadter traveled widely in the Near and Middle East, wrote and edited a number of books on Islam and literature, and composed articles on classical Arabic poetry and the problems of minorities and women in Islamic society.".
