- catalog abstract ""Hamilton begins with brief overviews of the geology and environment of the Rustler Hills where Granado Cave is located the material culture and subsistence patterns of the care's inhabitants the previous archaeological work in the area, and a description of his excavation methodology. In subsequent chapters he and other researchers present detailed analyses of the archaeological remains - burials; cordage and cotton, basketry; matting, bags, and sandals; wood artifacts; pottery; lithic and miscellaneous artifacts; vertebrate faunal remains; and the economic pollen spectrum - as well as the results of radiocarbon dating." "From these findings, Hamilton reconstructs the subsistence patterns and burial practices of these Native Americans, whom he identifies as a distinct, probably remnant group, possibly Hokan speaking, that was pushed into the environment by surrounding peoples. He concludes by proposing that they should be represented by a new archaeological phase, the Castile Phase, thus helping to clarify the still poorly understood late prehistory of the Trans-Pecos."--Jacket.".
