- catalog abstract ""Christopher Marlowe: A Literary Life situates the individual works of this intriguing dramatist within the context of his overall literary career. The study opens with a brief overview of the Marlovian canon and then moves on to look at his early life and education, demonstrating how the influences of this are detectable in both the scholarly tone of his work and, arguably, his consistent depictions of troubled families. The study then proceeds to treat his seven plays and one major poem as falling into three major groups reflecting his major interests and activities. The two parts of Tamburlaine and Dido, Queen of Carthage reflect Marlowe's interest in geography and politics; Doctor Faustus and The Jew of Malta both pose searching questions about religious faith; and The Massacre at Paris, Edward II and Hero and Leander all interrogate norms of sexuality and government. Finally, the book examines the long and sometimes spectacular afterlife of his works and of his literary reputation as a whole."--Jacket.".
