- catalog description "Prince Roland Bonaparte, a descendent of Napoleon I, devoted much of his life to studying the natural sciences and geography. Influenced by the French physician and anthropologist Paul Broca, Bonaparte perceived photography as a scientific tool, and in 1882 he began a photographic project to document various ethnic groups, offering these photographs to ethnological museums throughout Europe and the United States. By the 1890s, after amassing a collection of more than 7,000 negatives, he abandoned the project to pursue other interests. Alfred Ayotte was a journalist, photographer, and world traveler interested in anthropology.".
