- catalog description "Benjamin Colman (1673-1747) was born in Boston on October 19, 1673. He received an A.B. from Harvard College in 1692 and an A.M. in 1695. He wrote one of the earliest known plays by an American author, Gustavus Vasa, which was presented at Harvard in 1690. Colman began to preach in 1693, first in Medford, Massachusetts. In 1695 he departed on a ship for London. The ship was overtaken by a French privateer, who held the passengers captive before exchanging them once on land. Once freed, Colman proceeded to England. From 1697 to 1699 he was pastor at Bath, and he was ordained in London in 1699. Colman returned to Boston in 1699 at the behest of the men who had established the new Brattle Street Church. He served that congregation until his death. Colman was also involved on a few occasions in missionary work among the Indians living in New England and served as a commissioner for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England and the Parts Adjacent. He served as an Overseer of Harvard College for forty-eight years and as a Fellow for eleven years, forging a close friendship and working relationship with President John Leverett. On Leverett's death in 1724, Colman was offered the Harvard Presidency, but he declined, largely from concern that his liberal views would prove too controversial and divisive. He was awarded the D.D. in 1731 by Glasgow University. Colman was married three times (to Jane Clark, 1700-1731; Sarah Clark, 1732-1744; and Mary Frost, 1745-1747) and had three children with his first wife. All of his children, including the poet Jane Colman Turell, died before him. Benjamin Colman died in Boston on August 29, 1747.".
- catalog description "Ebenezer Turell (1702-1778) was born in Boston on February 5, 1702; he was the fifth and youngest child of Lydia (Stoddard) and Samuel Turell. He attended Harvard College, receiving an A.B. in 1721 and an A.M. in 1724. He had also begun pursuing theological studies under Benjamin Colman at the Brattle Street Church during this time, and in 1724 became minister of Medford. On August 11, 1726, Turell married Jane Colman, his mentor's daughter; they would have four children together before her death in 1735, although three of the children died prematurely. Turell remarried the same year, to Lucy Davenport; when she died in 1759, he married once again. He remained minister at Medford throughout his life. Ebenezer Turell died in Medford on December 5, 1778.".
