- catalog description "Sociologist and pioneer in research on family issues and education, Dorothy Fahs Beck was educated at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (AB 1928), the University of Chicago (MA 1932) and Columbia University (Ph.D 1944). She was the daughter of Charles Harvey Fahs and Sophia Lyon Fahs, the latter a prominent leader in Unitarian religious education. While a college student Dorothy Fahs Beck studied the plight of African Americans and mill workers by traveling on buses with her face darkened and working in a cotton mill in Durham, N.C. In 1930 she married Hubert Park Beck, whom she had met through the Unitarian church; they had one daughter, Brenda, born in 1940.".

In 1954 the couple taught at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, and the following year traveled in a remodeled bus from Lebanon to India with their daughter Brenda. In 1956 Dorothy Beck became research director for the Family Service Association of America where she was a leader in developing research tools and conducting research projects. The author (or co-author) of some 15 books, Beck created the Fahs-Beck Fund for Research and Experimentation, enlarging on an earlier bequest co-founded with her husband. Beck died in 2000.".
