- catalog description "Samuel Whiting (1597-1679) was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England on November 20, 1597. He was educated at Emanuel College, Cambridge, where he received an A.B. in 1616 and an A.M. in 1620. He emigrated to New England in 1636 with his second wife and two children (his first wife and two sons had died) and became minister of Lynn, Massachusetts, where he would serve for the rest of his life. In 1654 he was appointed as an Overseer of Harvard College, as he was not only one of the most learned scholars of the Massachusetts Bay Colony but also a strong advocate for public education. Samuel Whiting died in Lynn on December 11, 1679.".
