- catalog description "Feminist, lesbian, writer, consultant, and psychotherapist, Kim Chernin was born Elaine Kusnitz in the Bronx in 1940, the daughter of Russian-Jewish immigrants Rose (Chernin) and Paul Kusnitz. Her mother, a radical organizer with the Communist Party of the United States, and her father, an engineer, moved to Los Angeles in 1944 following the death of her older sister Nina. Chernin's early life was influenced by the loss of her sister and her mother's political activism. As a student at the University of California at Berkeley, she married David Netboy, and they traveled to England and Ireland where Chernin studied at Oxford and Trinity College. In 1963 they had a daughter Larissa Nicole. Returning to the United States, they separated and Chernin went back to school for at UC Berkeley, earning her degree in English literature (B.A. 1965, M.A. 1990). Following her divorce she assumed her mother's maiden name, Chernin. A second marriage to Robert Cantor, ended in 1978. Chernin subsequently lived with feminist poet Susan Griffin for four years.
