- catalog abstract ""First published in Spanish in 1911, this little-known biography of a late nineteenth and early twentieth century Colorado legislator is significant not just as an account of an accomplished politicians's career, but as the story of a life shaped by issues of race and class. Barela was born in New Mexico just before it became a U.S. territory, and his biography appeared just before New Mexico attained statehood. His biographer, clearly promoting Barela as a regional success story, writes of the inclusion of his portrait among those of fifteen other prominent Coloradans in the state capitol rotunda, of his defense of Mexicano land grants, his membership in Anglo-dominated civic associations, his work in establishing Baca County in recognition of Hispanic pioneers in southern Colorado, his promotion of the Columbus Day holiday, his call for the return of war trophies taken from Mexico, and his collaboration with Mexico's Diaz dynasty. In Colorado Barela supported women's suffrage and commuted the death sentence for a Hispano prisoner found guilty of murder. He also passed legislation to force Colorado prisoners to work in construction crews to build state roads. On the personal level, we learn of Barela's penchant for raising racehorses and his preoccupation over not leaving a male heir."--Jacket.".
