- catalog abstract "Like the rest of the population, Mongolian nomads lost the social advantages that they used to enjoy under the Soviet economic scheme. Surviving the the vast green desert of the Mongolian steppes requires developing new skills and knowledge. In 1991, the Mongolian Government, with the support of UNESCO, developed a non-formal distance education system capable of responding faster and more efficiently than traditional formal education to the population's learning needs. The women of the Gobi desert were identified as being the most in need and through learning activities offered through radio, printed materials and the support of visiting teachers, nomads were trained to develop income-generating activities such as crafts, trade, cookery, and other skills. Literacy and health education complete the training.".
