Since the abandonment of sugar cane cultivation, much of the land has returned to secondary forest. Barbuda suffered mainly from overcutting and overgrazing beginning in the 17th century. Very heavy grazing pressure continues in Barbuda. Despite great disturbance, a majority of the native species remain on both islands. Lists of native and exotic species are presented here. A protection plan should be established for several areas on both islands.".
