- catalog description "Irma Seijo Jarcho (born Irma H. Seijo, 1918), M.P.H., 1945, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts, was a bacteriologist and science educator. Jarcho was born 5 May 5 1918 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. She earned a B.S. in Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, in 1933. From 1944 to 1945, she was a graduate student at the Harvard School of Public Health, earning her Master's in 1945. In 1976, Jarcho earned a B.A. in science education at the Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City. Jarcho was a bacteriologist in the Venereal Disease Research Unit, New York Department of Health, New York City, from 1938 to 1944. She also published research (under her maiden name, Seijo) on penicillin with Dr. Arthur Cohn in 1944. Jarcho served as a research analyst in Latin America for the Medical Intelligence division of the United States Army’s Surgeon General’s Office (1945-1948), co-authored The Ecology of Malnutrition in the Far and Near East with Jacques M. May in 1961, and chaired the science department of the New Lincoln School, an experimental coeducational school in New York City, beginning in 1970. At the New Lincoln School, she co-founded the Teacher’s Clearing House for Science and Society Education in 1982. Jarcho also taught at the Trevor Day School in New York.".
