- catalog description "Schoolteacher and one of the first women to serve as a state policewoman in Massachusetts, Lotta Caldwell was born in Brighton, Mass., the daughter of Olive Anne and Warren H. Caldwell, a photographer. In 1907 she married Harry E. Lindblath, a bookbinder and publisher. They were divorced in 1916. Caldwell taught in the public schools of Somerville, Mass., and in 1930, when Massachusetts became the first state to appoint women to the state police, Lotta Caldwell and Mary Ramsdell were the first women to serve. They did not wear uniforms nor could they visit a crime scene unless accompanied by a male. Caldwell covered the southern and eastern part of the state while Ramsdell covered the western and central. They focused on crimes involving rape or children. Caldwell retired in 1940 and died in Florida in 1973.".
