- John_Medora abstract "John Madara (born May 28, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), also known as John or Johnny Madara, is an American singer, songwriter and record producer, who teamed up with David White to write the 1957 hit song "At the Hop".AT THE HOP, recorded by Danny & The Juniors, remained #1 for an astounding 7 weeks, the first record ever to reach that success, and it has remained a rock and roll classic to this day.Following AT THE HOP, John produced Danny and The Juniors' ROCK AND ROLL IS HERE TO STAY, written by Dave White, and John and Dave produced and co-wrote the mega-hits THE FLY (Chubby Checker), 1-2-3 (Len Barry) and YOU DON'T OWN ME (Lesley Gore).During that same period, John was co-writing and producing for other artists, including Maureen Gray, The Sherrys, Billy and The Essentials, The Pixies Three, The Secrets and Bunny Sigler. In a nightclub, John discovered Leon Huff performing with a group, The Lavenders, which John and Dave recorded later on. Leon was signed to an exclusive writer and producer's contract, and he wrote and played on many of the Madara & White records before he met and teamed up with Kenny Gamble. Gamble & Huff would become one of the most prolific songwriting teams in the history of rock and roll. John co-published many of their songs, including "Expressway To Your Heart," "Cowboys To Girls," "Together," "Western Union Man," "Only The Strong Survive," "Never Gonna Give You Up" and "I Just Can't Stop Dancing," just to name a few. In the Mid '60s, John and Dave, along with D.J. Ray Gilmore, formed a group called The Spokesmen. They released THE DAWN OF CORRECTION, an answer song to the enormous hit "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire. The song was very controversial. Time Magazine did an article on the two songs, comparing the Madara & White lyrics with Barry McGuire lyrics. In some cases the group was not permitted to sing the song on the air and had to replace it with another song. The song was a huge hit and reached the Top 20 on the charts. In 1965, John and Dave started their own publishing company, discovering and signing new songwriters. The company was very successful, and in 1984, the company was sold to Michael Jackson. In 1967, John, Dave White and Ray Gilmore wrote the biggest selling record of all time in Australia, SADIE THE CLEANING LADY, sung by the legendary Johnny Farnham. To this day, Johnny Farnham still performs it at his concerts, to the delight of his audiences. In 1968, John discovered one of the most successful duos of all time, Daryl Hall and John Oates. With them he produced their early recordings, several of them co-produced with fellow Philadelphian, Tom Sellers. In 1972, John moved to L.A., where he produced an album with Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods. Following that album, John produced an album with Denny Doherty, his first recordings after the breakup of The Mamas and The Papas. Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips sang backgrounds. From there John produced the soundtrack album for the James Caan/Marsha Mason movie, Cinderella Liberty, and also produced the title song for the Cliff Robertson movie Ace Eli and Roger of The Sky.Las Vegas was also becoming a happening place for singers and performers. So it would seem appropriate that John would spend two years of his life working with one of the most successful performers of all time, Wayne Newton. He produced two of Wayne's albums and also produced and wrote songs for a Christmas television special for Wayne on CBS.Also in the '70s, John was the music supervisor and wrote and produced the themes and most of the music for the hugely successful SID AND MARTY KROFFT SUPER SHOW, a weekly show which ran every Saturday morning. The hour featured three continuing mini-series, "Captain Kool & The Kongs," "Magic Mongo" and "Big Foot and Wildboy." John was involved for the first two seasons of the show along with the network special introducing the new season. John also wrote the theme song for ABC Sports, which ran for two seasons. In the mid '80's, John teamed up with one of the great film animators of all time, Ralph Bakshi. Ralph, known for the controversial film "Fritz The Cat," and also the highly regarded films "American Pop" and "Lord Of The Rings," needed songs for his upcoming animated film HEY GOOD LOOKIN'. John wrote and arranged all 18 songs in the film, which Time Magazine and Playboy raved about and later called a cult classic. In 2002 John produced an album with Tony Danza called "The House I live In." The great Artie Butler did the arrangements.Through the years, John has produced albums and singles for companies such as CBS, Warner Bros., Polydor, Atlantic, Paramount, 20th Century, MGM and ABC Records.John Madara's songs have reached millions of people through radio, films and television. Worldwide sales of John's songs and productions have reached over 2 hundred million.Madara & White songs have appeared on some of the biggest grossing soundtrack albums of all time, including "American Graffiti" and "Woodstock" (At The Hop), "Grease" (Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay), "Hairspray" (The Fly and You Don't Own Me), "Mr. Holland's Opus" (1-2-3), and "Dirty Dancing" and "The First Wives Club" (You Don't Own Me). It was the 1996 hit film, "The First Wives Club," that paid the contemporary strength of John's talent the ultimate compliment by not only featuring "You Don't Own Me" but by making it the theme of the movie.Contemporary, in fact, has proven to be one of the mainstays of John Madara's contributions through the years. He has consistently offered the world of music songs that speak clearly of given eras, but have equal impact on all eras.John has continued to write and produce music, working with young, up-and-coming artists. He has always been a futurist, excited about working with new technology and incorporating it into his music and productions. His hands-on approach to every project he is involved in, whether it be as a writer, producer, music supervisor, editor or mixer, has enabled John to maintain the sound that is uniquely his own.BMI has awarded John's songs with over 1 million performances of "The Fly," over 2 million performances of "At The Hop" and "You Don't Own Me," and over 3 million performances of "1-2-3."In March of 2001, "At The Hop" was voted by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the top 100 songs of the century. The soundtrack album "Grease," was voted one of the top albums of the century. "Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay" is featured on that album. In 2004, "1-2-3" was featured in a National TV ad campaign for The American Dairy Council and ran four over one year.At the end of 2004, Billboard listed "At The Hop" as the 23rd biggest song and record of all time.In 2008, "1-2-3" was featured on Broadway in "Shout, The Mod Musical" and "You Don't Own Me" was featured on Broadway in "The Marvelous Wonderettes."In October of 2013, Madara & White were honored in their city of Philadelphia with a plaque on the famed Avenue of the Arts by the Philadelphia Music Alliance, awarded for outstanding achievement as songwriters and record producers.".
